About Bob Mayhew
Our clinician is Bob Mayhew
Bob started Western riding way back in 1979.
Bob soon recognised that the true western riding as seen at American Horse Shows was the way to get the discipline accepted by the ‘English’ riding fraternity and he therefore made that his goal.
Bob was one of the founders of the Western Equestrian Society and set targets for an education program whereby instructors were able to qualify as WES approved. He also formed a judging programme to have a standardised system so as the judges were educated and tested. This moved the whole discipline to a higher level. Many of the Western Trainers of today had their first lessons with Bob.
Bob has held judges’ cards with the FEI, AQHA, APHA, NCHA, and NRHA and has judged shows in many European countries, as well as the USA and Canada. He has several times judged the NRHA futurity in Oklahoma, and the Italian and German futurities. Other western shows he has judged include Equitana and Americana, both held in Germany.
His show horses have achieved many successes with AQHA wins and all-around and in reining he and his pupils have won numerus NRHA bronze and Pewter trophies. He has represented the UK in reining on four different occasions including at the World Equestrian Games in Spain.
One the horses he trained ‘Dun It at Dawn’ returned to the USA to win numerous bronze trophies and is still competing in non pro aged events in sunny California.
Bobs first horse, the much-loved Tewy, was the first British bred Quarter horse to show in Europe, making the finals in the reining bronze trophy and in Trail at Americana. A Quarter horse that he and his wife imported as a yearling ‘Sensational Keeper’ was the first horse to become an AQHA Champion won entirely from shows in the UK.
As well as demonstrating western riding throughout Great Britain including one notable tour with Ian Stark Bob has given clinics in Sweden, Germany, Belgium, Denmark and Finland with some of his pupils going on to win Championships in the European Championships as well as in their in own countries. Bob coached the British Quarter Horse Youth team to a 5th place in the AQHA youth world cup
Bob is always thankful and is quick to point out the time and advise given to him by such notables as Ray Hunt, Dick Peiper, Bob Loomis, Mike MacEntire, Doug Milholland, Francois Gautier, Morgan Libbert, Pete Kyle, and his great friend Larry Kasten who as the head of the University of Wisconsins Equine Programme at that time is behind many of the notables of today’s top competing riders.
Bob has helped to strengthen the NRHA of Germanys judges’ education programme by adding input and by giving judges seminars. He has also given judging seminars in the UK and Sweden.
Before semi retiring, Bob was a regular attendee of seminars in the USA for NRHA, AQHA and the colour breed council.
Bob’s worldwide best-selling book on Western Riding has been internationally acclaimed by top horsemen, as has his two videos and CDs on training the Western Horse.
